At The Good Portion Books we delight in the doctrines of God because knowing God is what we were created for. God reveals himself to us through the pages of Scripture so that we can know him. This is true no matter how young or old we are.

The week of March 16, 2020, our church was told we couldn’t gather. The same week, my U.S. university-attending daughters bought tickets to Dubai and arrived home the day before the airports shut down. (We loved having the girls home!) After they arrived, only one of us could leave the house at a time with a permit once every three days. At first it was fun, but it’s not easy having five adults locked down in the same house 24/7 with online school in session at various hours of the day and night.
Of course, all of us hoped that things would turn around soon. But then the cancelations started rolling in: retreats, conferences, graduation ceremonies, summer abroad programs, internships, training, and a language immersion capstone year. All of our plans were canceled with a slew of emails.

A dear sister went to be with the Lord last week. It was an honor to know her. She loved people, and she loved God’s word. We grieve, but we grieve with hope. Arlene is now with her Savior face to face.

I met Arlene sometime last year at Thursday night Bible study. Her features reminded me of my mom with her big smile and warm and motherly voice, so I went and introduced myself. She was curious to know what my mother was like and from there our friendship began.

“I like your ink,” I say casually as I walk past the woman in my exercise class. “Thanks,” she mumbles, eyeing me with that look.
It’s the look people give when someone notices their tattoo. They wonder if the person really means the compliment, or if they just happened to notice their purposely and permanently pigmented skin.
